A look back at our 120 year Celebrations

In this first edition of Alumni e-News, we look back at the wonderful celebrations held in 2017 to commemorate 120 years of Loreto Normanhurst education. To mark this significant anniversary, the school held a series of events to recognise and honour our heritage and the contributions of those who have gone before us, and to celebrate the wonderful school that we are privileged to be part of today.

Celebration of the Eucharist

On 28 February 2017 we commemorated 120 years since the laying of the Foundation Stone at Loreto Normanhurst in 1897. Members of the IBVM, staff, students, parents and guests, journeyed together through time, sharing in a beautiful liturgy rich with stories of the past 120 years. The presence of the thirteen IBVM sisters enriched our celebration, as we honoured the Loreto Sisters and their inspirational work with reverence and appreciation.

120 Cocktail Party

A much-cherished feature of Loreto Normanhurst is the strength of relationships within our community. In March 2017, over 550 Loreto parents, staff and special guests gathered for the 120 Cocktail Party. The event was a wonderful celebration of friendships and camaraderie and an opportunity for the whole school community to celebrate our 120-year anniversary together.

IBVM Luncheon

Our celebrations continued in October 2017 with a very special event for the IBVM. Twenty-five Loreto Sisters returned to celebrate their time at Normanhurst as a student, staff member, or member of the novitiate. It was a truly beautiful day where we were able to celebrate the legacy that the IBVM. Sr Wendy Hildebrand IBVM, Loreto Australia and South East Asia Province Leader, spoke warmly of the Sisters’ love of Normanhurst and blessed us all for the next 120 years.

‘120 Inspirational Loreto Women’ book

In mid-November 2017 we had a wonderful celebration in the Reception Room and gardens to launch a very special book, ‘120 Inspirational Loreto Women’. The book features members of the IBVM, ex-students, and members of the broader Loreto Normanhurst community. It showcases stories of 120 outstanding Loreto women throughout the school’s history.

Reception Room

On that same evening we re-opened the Reception and Brewer Rooms which are adjoined to the Chapel. These heritage rooms in the 1897 building that were once the original classrooms and parlour, have been restored to their former glory. The Reception Room has been at the heart of Loreto Normanhurst for 120 years and is a much-treasured space.

120 years was a significant event for the whole Loreto Normanhurst community. The legacy of Mary Ward and Gonzaga Barry’s vision for educating young women is as vibrant today as it was when the Foundation Stone was laid here on 28 February 1897.

We treasure our past heritage and look to the future with confidence. These events took our community on a journey which celebrated our past and our connection to Loreto Normanhurst.
