President’s Message

Dear ex-students,

I hope that you are enjoying life and your connections with Loreto, either in the school community, or as an ex-student.  I would like to welcome the Class of 2019 who have joined our Association as life members and trust that you will enjoy a continued connection in the spirit of Loreto and Mary Ward, both in Sydney and worldwide.

Thank you to those ex-students who joined us for our events held this year, particularly those events which supported fundraising for drought relief and the school’s Bursary Welfare Fund.  Loreto friendships are life-long and we value connectedness and we welcome you to all our events – please come along.

I was honoured to represent the ex-students at the Year 12 Awards Ceremony where I presented the Pat Taylor Award, together with Margot Dwyer (nee Taylor), for “strong commitment to Loreto” to student, Anna Mossie.  This award is presented to a student who consistently contributes over a number of years at Loreto through reliable, supportive and helpful service to the school.

At the AGM, we presented a cheque for $20,000 towards a part bursary for a senior student, in compliance with our annual commitment to the school. Thank you to all ex-students who have helped raise donations and who have donated at your reunions for the school’s Bursary Welfare Fund.

Also at our AGM, we took the opportunity to farewell Sr Libby Rogerson as she moves from Normanhurst.  Libby has been the IBVM presence in Normanhurst for many years and has been a ‘woman in time who has made many changes’ to a world where she has seen injustice and poverty.

Loreto Federation will be held in Adelaide on 10-11th October 2020.  The theme is “Inspire”.  I am in contact with the organisers regarding the arrangements for this weekend and will keep you informed as I receive further details. Please consider joining other ex-student’s travelling to Adelaide for this wonderful Federation weekend.

I met with Ms Marina Ugonotti, Principal, in connection with working with the school to implement the Federation Resolution on Mentoring.    We wish to work in partnership with the school to provide younger ex-students to mentor current students.  The opportunity arose this year when the school held a Careers Expo and invited a number of younger ex-students as mentors. This will be an ongoing support to the girls and the school.

Country Ex-Students

A number of the Ex-Students’ Association members attended the Ex-Students’ Luncheon in Dubbo.  This was a luncheon hosted by the ex-students to introduce Marina as well as the Director of Boarding, Mrs Kate Kovacs and the Director of Mission, Mrs Libby Parker to all in attendance.  We also had current and prospective parents join us and it was a great day.

We are  committed to holding a function next year as a fundraiser for country folk trying to outlast these drought conditions.  You are certainly in our thoughts and prayers for sustaining rain to come soon.

Loreto Kirribilli and MWIA

The Muriel’s Wedding Theatre Party was very successful and we handed a cheque to MWIA for $3000 in compliance with the rules of our Constitution.

Janneke worked tirelessly with PAL and the Development Office over the Spring Fair preparations and our participation and support of the Fair.    It was a very successful day selling plants, flowers and memorabilia and we raised  $2149 towards the bursary program. A special thank you to Janneke for all her hard work on the Spring Fair project.

We are delighted to be working with PAL and supporting their events.

This year we have had a number of class reunions.  These reunions are a great way for ex-students to reconnect.   We are also very grateful to the organisers of number of reunions who presented a donation to the ex-students for the bursary program.  Thank you for your generosity.

Register your details

It is very important for all ex-students to register their current details on the school website.  Unless you do this, you may miss out on invitations and communications from the school.

We are again participating in Open Day (Saturday 7 March 2020), the Loreto Canberra Luncheon (Saturday 14 March 2020), Re-Connecting Drinks (Wednesday 8 April 2020), and Federation (Saturday 10 – Sunday 11 October 2020).

We plan to host a High Tea in the Reception Room prior to Mother’s Day next year as a fundraiser for the school’s bursary program.  It would be great if each class had a table at this event.

Save the date – Thursday 10 September – Loreto Kirribilli Ex-Students’ Bursary Fundraiser Golf Day to be held at Manly Golf Course. Details to be announced at a later date.

I have been honoured to be included as the Loreto ex-student representative in various meetings at the school with Marina and the Leadership team and external marketing agencies in connection with reviewing the school’s branding and messaging.

Thank you

A special thank you to Marina for embracing the ex-students into the school community;  it’s greatly appreciated.

Thank you to the Development Team, led by Ms Grace Paraino, Dean of Development and Alumni, for your support and hard work on behalf of the ex-students this year.

Thank you to Ms Rowena Curtis, the school archivist, who approaches her job with such passion and interest and loves to hear stories of our school days and provides us with help when organising school reunions.

Thank you to Sr Libby who has been on our Association for many years and also the Federation Committee.  Libby has always provided unstinting support and wise words of guidance – we will miss you Libby!

Finally, a very special thank you to the Association members who have supported me throughout the year for which I am very grateful.

I would like to invite any ex-students who have the time and commitment to give back to our wonderful school by joining our Association to ensure that the ex-students remain a loyal force of support and presence in the school community.  We welcome a diversity of ex-students who have different talents to offer. Please contact me at  I would be delighted if you would consider stepping up to join us as “women in time will come to do much”.

Sincere and best wishes for the festive season,

Ms Patsy Shannon
